Super Socket 7 a.k.a. Super 7 was the socket for CPGA-321-packaged AMD K6-2 and K6-III microprocessors, compatible with Intel's earlier Socket 7, and an open standard unlike Intel's competing Socket 8 and Slot 1. The Super7 platform added new features such as AGP support, a backside L2 and frontside L3 cache, dynamic core voltage for extended battery life, higher core frequencies, and raised the frontside bus clock to 100 MHz. For mobile and embedded processors AMD developed the CBGA-360 and OBGA-349 packages. Super Socket 7 was superseded by Slot A.

Features[edit]

  • 321-pin staggered pin grid array, 1.27/2.54 mm pitch, 19 × 19 pins, 49.5 × 49.5 mm ceramic substrate

Pin Map[edit]

Notes:

  • Pin AN5 VCC2H/L# is INC on K6 Model 6.
  • Pin C1 is INC on K6 Model 6 and 7, NC on other models.
  • Pins E17, E25, R34, AN35, AH32 are VID[4:0] (Voltage Identification) outputs only on K6-2 and K6-III low power models, NC otherwise. Models with PowerNow! technology can change the VID dynamically.
  • Pin AH32 (KEY) prevents CPU insertion into Socket 5.
  • On Pentium processors for Socket 7:
    • Pins H34, J33, L35, AD4, AE3, AA3, AC3, AE35, Q35 (all RSVD on Super Socket 7) carry the APIC and dual processor interface.
    • Pins Q3, R4, S3, S5 (all RSVD) carry debug signals.
    • Pin AL7 (INC) is defined as BUSCHK#. Allows the system to signal an unsuccessful completion of a bus cycle.
    • Pin Y35 (INC) is FRCMC#. Functional redundancy checking master/checker mode input.
    • Pin P4 (RSVD) is IERR#. Output indicating internal parity and functional redundancy errors.
    • Pin Z34 (INC) is PEN#. Input to determine whether a machine check exception will be taken as a result of a data parity error on a read cycle.
    • Pin AC35 (INC) is R/S#. Interrupt pin to stop normal execution and place the processor into an idle state.
    • Pin AC5 (RSVD) is PRDY. Indicates that the processor has stopped in response to R/S#.
    • Pin W35 (BF2), AN5 (VCC2H/L#), B2 (VCC2), A3 (VSS) are NC/INC.
    • Pin AL1 (VCC2DET) is INC on the Pentium 75/90/100/120/133/150/166/200 (these processors do not support split power planes), VCC2DET# on the Pentium MMX to indicate VCC2 must be 2.8 V. On Super Socket 7 VCC2DET and VCC2H/L# distinguish processors with VCC2 of 2.4 V or lower.
