Am186Ex is a family of 16-bit microcontrollers developed by AMD that incorporated the Am186 core along with a number of other application-specific features designed for various embedded applications.

The Am186Ex is a family of microcontrollers that incorporated the Am186 core along with a number of units. AMD introduced a number of series including: Am186EM, Am186ES, Am186ER, Am186ED.

Am186ER[edit]

With low-density SRAM (less than 4 Megabit) on the decline in the mid 1990s, the typical off-the-shelf setup would require 64K SRAM in a 2 x 32K setup to satisfy the 186's 16-bit external data bus. For the average system that would mean twice the general SRAM needed. AMD's introduced the Am186ER series in 1996. These microcontrollers supported all the features of the Am186ES as well as 32K of integrated RAM on-die.
