Am186Ex is a family of 16-bit microcontrollers that incorporated the Am186 core along with a number of other application-specific features.

Overview

The Am186Ex is a family of microcontrollers that incorporated the Am186 core along with a number of units. AMD introduced a number of series including: Am186EM, Am186ES, Am186ER, Am186ED.

All MCUs include the following base features:

Members

Am186EM

The Am186EM series was introduced in 1995 and included the base features only. Note that this MCU does not have a dedicated watchdog timer, instead timer 1 (from the 3 available timers) can be used a watchdog timer.

  • 6 x external interrupts

Am186ES

Since 2001 AMD no longer recommends using the Am186ES in new designs. The Am186ER is backwards compatible with the Am186ES, requires no software modification, and just a few minor circuitry change. The Am186ES included all the base features as well as the following:

  • 8-bit or 16-bit memory and I/O static bus modes
  • Serial port hardware handshaking
  • independent serial port baud rate generators
  • Watchdog timer can generate NMI or reset
  • Pseudo static RAM (PSRAM) controller
  • pulse-width demodulation
  • 8 x external interrupts
  • 8 x internal interrupts

Am186ER

With low-density SRAM (less than 4 Megabit) on the decline in the mid 1990s, the typical off-the-shelf setup would require 64K SRAM in a 2 x 32K setup to satisfy the 186's 16-bit external data bus. For the average system that would mean twice the general SRAM needed. AMD's introduced the Am186ER series in 1996. These microcontrollers supported all the features of the Am186ES as well as 32K of integrated RAM on-die.

  • Watchdog timer can generate NMI or reset
  • 6 x external interrupts
  • 32 KB SRAM

Am186ED

The Am186ED supported all the features of the Am186ES but also incorporated a programmable DRAM controller.

  • programmable DRAM controller
  • 8-bit or 16-bit memory and I/O static bus modes
  • Serial port hardware handshaking
  • independent serial port baud rate generators
  • Watchdog timer can generate NMI or reset
  • pulse-width demodulation
  • 8 x external interrupts
  • 8 x internal interrupts
