Overview[edit]
Qualcomm announced the MSM6xxx family of system on chips in March of 2001. The chips offered key technologies such as second-generation (2G) and third-generation (3G) wireless technologies and wireless global roaming. These chips have various support levels for gpsOne position location capabilities, Bluetooth connectivity capabilities, UMTS Subscriber Identity Module (SIM), Removable User Identity Module (R-UIM) and advanced multimedia features such as Qtunes audio decoders, MPEG, MP3, and Compact Media Extension (CME) MIDI software support.
MSM6xxx is broken down into 3 platforms:
- Value Platform - basic entry-level devices features such as basic color screens support, position-location services, music, ringtones and voice recognition features.
- Multimedia Platform - mid-range devices features such as position-location services, video, audio, and gaming.
- Enhanced Multimedia Platform - high-end devices features such as security, position-location, camera & imaging, audio, video, streaming, and conferencing.
