Am186 (AMD 80186) was a second-sourced 80186 chip designed by Intel and manufactured by AMD. Designs and tools for the 186 were transferred to AMD in March of 1984, sample chips were available Q3 and volume production started Q4 1984. The Am186 is an offshoot of the mainstream x86 series designed for embedded application as opposed to general personal computers and was released around the same time AMD released their Am286 family.
