A multiprocessor (or a multiprocessor system) is a system configuration whereby two or more microprocessors are used together simultaneously to execute tasks using the same shared system resources (e.g. memory, I/O, peripherals). This is in contrast to a uniprocessor which incorporates just a single processor. For this reason this is type of system is sometimes also referred to as a multi-socket system.
