Best-Known Method (BKM)

Best-known methods (BKM) is a term originally crafted in the semiconductor manufacturing industry to refer to a well-documented technic or procedure that is considered the current standard on how to execute a given process.

Overview

Traditionally, the term "Best Practice" is mistakenly understood as making the process definition immutable. People feel the "Best Practice" can't be published until it is the "best" procedure ever defined, (hence "Best Practice") and therefore discourages challenging the status quo or early implementation of partial solutions.

When the term BKM has been used in place of "Best Practice", it has been proven through several studies to improve participation on process development by stating that "the current method is our standard until we find a better way" and "the current process is not necessarily the best possible way to do it". This allows for proposing a better implementation, if found.
