Programmable Logic Devices or PLDs allow users to create custom hardware devices. Almost all modern electronic systems use PLDs for emulation, prototyping and in some cases production. First invented in the late 70s by MMI they are currently a roughly $10 B segment of the semiconductor industry. The primary companies are Xilinx, Intel-Altera, Lattice, Microsemi and Quicklogic.
